During practice, several individuals come to healthcare seeking a doctor to pronounce the mentally fit or unfit in legal tussles over property and criminal activities. Mentally ill patients are often violent, and healthcare providers confine them in asylums or other forms of restraints to ensure the safety of other patients. Thus, the literature provides accurate information regarding the lack of patient safety secondary to mental illnesses. Mental health issues thus negatively affect patient safety and that of others.
Poor mental health costs the world more than $1trillion to treat and manage, and the global economy also suffers from lost productivity because most mentally ill patients are often declared unfit for work (Knapp & Wong, 2020). In addition, each year, individuals legally lose over $150 billion earnings after they are declared legally mentally ill. They also expose individuals to severe and chronic conditions, escalating healthcare costs to the individuals and their families. Mentally ill students cannot concentrate, and the results are poor academic performance, which leads to poor quality of life. Some families see their family members as burdens and neglect them, putting the burden and consequent financial pressure on the healthcare systems and the government (Knapp & Wang, 2020). Neglected mental illnesses lead to complicated, complex conditions that are costly to treat and manage. Over three-quarters of these illnesses begin before the age of 25, and hence, adolescent mental health is integral. Managing adolescent mental health can improve their care quality and quality of life even as adults, safety, and reduce costs to the individuals and the systems.
Nursing Practice Standards and/or Organizational or Governmental Policies Effects on Adolescent Mental Health
The local and national governments have major roles in ensuring quality care, patient safety, and cost containment for patients with mental health disorders. The National Mental Health Act stipulations that protect and promote individuals’ mental health are enacted by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The body is responsible for various regulations and policies that regulate the mental health of US citizens. Through the national center for School mental health (NCSMH), the government invests in school mental health education as a preventive strategy to curb the exponential costs of managing mental health issues (Arango et al., 2018). NCSMH supports policies and programs that improve learning and promote success among students and pupils.
Over time, government policies such as setting mental health departments in all hospitals, providing free treatment for mental health issues, and creating public awareness on mental health issues have shown success in the total number of clients receiving mental healthcare. The government also demands that mentally ill patients be accorded equal medical assistance as other patients; they have the right to receive healthcare as covered in the Mental Health Policy. Government funding greatly affects the affordability of healthcare services, hence healthcare access and care quality. According to Knopp and Wong (2020), the government has been proactive in other areas such as postnatal psychosis management interventions with a substantial financial input that lacks child and adolescent mental health management. There are still fewer government efforts to manage adolescents’ mental health.
Government policies have a major impact on nurses’ interventions in promoting adolescents’ mental health. A nurse must recognize mentally ill patients’ rights and provide interventions that suit their needs. Nurses’ interventions must not violate the policy stipulations and inform the scope of practice within which a nurse can intervene.
The federal government delegates the roles of formulating the scope of practice to the state governments. However, the federal government regulates the nurses’ scope of practice through bodies like the NIMH and the national mental health act. The state government regulates the nurses’ scope of practice through the nursing practice act and the mental health act under the state board of nursing. The two define the roles and scope of practice regarding mental health. The nursing practice act stipulations require nurses to provide affordable, high-quality, and safe care to all patients (Cassiani et al., 2020). Nurses must thus provide ethically acceptable interventions and relay no harm to the individuals within the nursing scope of practice as stipulated by these policies and regulations at the local and national level.
Proposed Strategies to manage Adolescent Mental Health
Several interventions are integral in managing adolescents’ mental health issues. The government has been on the frontline in providing free medical care for mentally ill adolescents and children in the past. Free mental health consultation services improve health-seeking behavior, promoting early detection and management of these mental illnesses (Zhai & Du, 2020 NURS-FPX4900 Assessment 2 Quality, safety, and Cost Consideration). Early detection prevents disease complications, which reduces the cost burden on the individual and the healthcare system. It also improves care quality and promotes patient safety. School programs have been formidable in delivering education to the students on sex education, nutrition, and physical health. According to O’Connor et al. (2018), school education programs have shown a marked improvement in reaching students with mental health issues, providing quality care, and preventing complications and escalated healthcare costs. Teaching the students on mental health enables them to recognize symptoms of mental illnesses in themselves and others and helps them seek help early, preventing complications such as violent behavior and suicidal tendencies promoting safety. These programs may not reach all adolescents, but they reach a considerable percent and greatly influence their health.
Teens are more engaged in online resource platforms such as social media due to the increased access to smartphones and internet sources. According to Park and Kwon (2018), many adolescents engage in online activities such as texting on social media and using online reading materials for their academics. Some online resources such as Jed Foundation, Health Talk, and Teens Health have had marked success in helping students manage various conditions such as suicide, stress, depression, and anxiety (Park & Kwon, 2018). An online mental health program targeting adolescents would allow adolescents to make decisions positively affecting their mental health. The platform would also be an integral consultation platform for the adolescents requiring medical attention, improving the quality of care. Proper consultation services would relieve the burdens of mental health illness on the individual and the system and the costs from the complications of the unmanaged mental health problems.
Conclusion
Mental health services negatively affect the quality of life of adolescents. In addition, it alters the quality of care they receive because mental health issues complicate chronic illnesses and predispose individuals to chronic conditions. Mental health issues also impair safety, and a significant percentage of crimes are linked to mental health illnesses. Complicated disease forms relay high healthcare costs to individuals, families, and the healthcare system. Hence, there is a need for formidable strategies to ensure cost containment, high-quality care delivery, and patient safety. School-based mental health programs, formidable online resources, and free mental healthcare services for adolescents are effective strategies, as discussed in the paper.
