A big problem facing the healthcare system is the shortage of nurses. There are an estimated 3.9 million nurses in the United States, and it was predicted that an additional one million nurses were needed by the year 2020. Nurses play a critical part in the healthcare and are one of the largest and fastest growing health professions. Though nursing is the largest and fastest growing profession, there is a shortage of nursing and the demand for nurses continues to increase. The United States faces increase nurse shortage due to the increased patient demand for care, (Hunter, DNP, RN, CHSE, CNE, C., 2021).

The shortage of nurses puts a strain on the healthcare system and affects patient care. Several issues are of concern to which the reason of nurse shortage. There is a lack of qualified faculty to teach and classroom spaces to teach nursing students, increase number of nurses retiring or leaving profession, nursing burnout which can be due to the same nursing shortage problem and the increased number of the aging population needing patient care, (AHC MEDIA., 2021). The recent pandemic of COVID has increased the demand for nurses and it continues to put a strain to the healthcare system.

Nurse shortage needs to be studied more to reduce nurse burnout, prevent and reduce medication errors and deaths, reduce wait times for patients, provide better access to education for those seeking a career in nursing, provide accommodations and flexibility, (Haddad, L. M., 2020).
